Game strategy
The fourth entry in Gameloft's Gangstar series, Gangstar Vegas is, for all intents and purposes, a GTA clone. That's not to say it's completely without merit, just that it takes a familiar open-world crime genre and runs with it, and a lot of the criticism against it has to do with this lack of originality.
You play as Jason Malone, a rising MMA star who is being paid by gangster Frank Valieno. Predictably, everything goes pear-shaped and Jason soon finds himself on the run. Alone in Sin City, Jason turns to Vera and Karen, who take control of some of the petty crimes that Frank has no involvement in, and soon find themselves running errands and becoming more immersed in the seedy criminal underbelly of Las Vegas.
Granted, the story is generic, but it's really just a flimsy framework for the myriad of nasty shenanigans you can pull off in the game, either story-related or as optional side quests. These include prerequisite Taxi Missions, Rampage, Street Races, Horde Mode, and more; Gameloft's depiction of Vegas is absolutely huge and packed with things to do.
The campaign is engaging enough to motivate players to complete the 80 missions, and the voiceovers are of a good standard, but aside from a few moments of unhinged brilliance, this is the usual "trying to climb the criminal ladder" thing we've seen a thousand times man-made products.
Unfortunately, getting around Vegas is a slog due to poor controls. You eventually learn to compensate for them, but controlling Jason's movements while walking is like rollerblading on an ice rink. There's an annoying swipe animation every time you stop, even while walking, and you'll often find yourself running in the opposite direction when you try to use the on-screen thumbstick. Another point of contention is that every time you get close to an object while running, Jason will try to climb up or over it, making on-foot chase missions and context-sensitive movement a real chore.
At least the vehicle handles slightly better when you turn off tilt control, but sometimes you'll drastically change your trajectory for no apparent reason. As I said, you do eventually learn to deal with these issues, but it's a bit of a shame that the same focus on graphics didn't transfer to the control scheme.
Gunfights are incredibly easy; while under cover, you select targets by touching the screen and automatically switch between the most present dangers. The hand-to-hand combat is also very powerful and easy to use, making full use of Jason's MMA skills. The customization options are truly astounding - almost every aspect of the game can be upgraded through skill points earned from completing certain tasks, and if you're low on cash you can always gamble at one of the many casinos or enter a fighting tournament. Pawnshops are located throughout the city, offering unique items provided you have the required components, which can be obtained by finding high-value targets.
Properties can also be purchased, but oddly you can't have your own crib; while there is an option to purchase IAP to speed up the process of building up your stats, cash supply, and items, I never felt it was necessary, just for those who prefer These things are shortcuts for people.
Another nice option is to select missions and shops directly from the menu, easing the monotonous task of driving from one place to another, although I personally feel like I'm cheating every time I choose to do this.
